Dresses!

Had dinner last night at Niclas grans place. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me. She had made herring with potato mash, carrots and broccoli. I love herring. I'm thinking of making some pickled herring. There is a place at Slussen in Stockholm where you can get herring on hard bread. I definitely recommend it, it's just outside the tubestation on the square. Maybe doesn't sound much but it's a typical Swedish dish.

After dinner Niclas gran Gurli brought out a big sack of clothes for me to try out. I've always loved old dresses and used to dress up in my grans old dresses. Problem is she is really tiny and I am quite tall so none of her dresses fit me today. Anyway the dresses I got from Gurli and her sister Dagmar fitted like a second skin! Every single dress fitted me! So I now have over 10 new dresses for the summer! I am so happy! They are wonderful! Most of them fantastic designer dresses from around the 60's and a few of them handmade especially for Gurli when she was younger. Niclas and I went out for a drink last night at Little Quarter (Best cocktails in town by the way!) and I wore a black 50's dress that is one of my favourites. I'll have to try them all out again and take some photos. But today is a really cloudy dark day, and I hate taking photos with flash, so you will have to wait I'm afraid...

A couple of my new dresses. Most of them have floral prints. Aren't they beautiful? <3 /G

THE HUNGOEVR COOBKOOK

After drinking a bit to much tequila at Kattis place yesterday Niclas and I woke this morning (more afternoon...) quite hungover. We decided we had the fantastic advantage of owning The Hungoevr Coobkook that I bought for Niclas for Christmas.

After completing the test to identify our diagnosis we came to tha conclusion that Niclas had the Atomic hangover and I had the Cosmic hangover. We decided to combine the recipes from both chapters and ended up with a lemon lassie for my cosmic hangover and a potato hash with avocado and bacon (except we replaced the bacon with halloumi) for Niclas atomic hangover.

True enough the lemon lassi was perfect for me. I tend to be the "cosmic" type and prefer a light breakfast/brunch whenever I'm hungover. The potato hash was really good too though. Suddenly having a hangover isn't at all that bad but actually quite nice...

Bon appétit! (click for larger pictures) xxx /G

Rick Stein

I know it's a bit late for this. But I promised I would show you the tasting menu from Rick Stein's reastaurant in Padstow, Cornwall as it was one of the most fantastic things I have ever eaten. Tasting menus in England aren't the same as in Sweden. In Sweden every dish would be pretty small. Here the dishes were quite big, and with so many we were completely full up when getting to the fifth course. For larger picture just klick it. The lobster salad and the Sea Bass were my favourites... Mm...getting hungry now...

Just thinking....

Yesterday I was sitting on my balcony with a cup of coffee and a cigarette when a woman walks by outside my window with a huge bag of crisps in her arms, eating as she goes along. And I just realized how wierd Sweden is sometimes. I have never in my entire life seen a grown woman out walking and eating crisps, maybe from one of the small packs they have in vendin machines, but only juring the night going home from a party. Never in broad daylight with a big pack. Swedes are so wierd with this. You cant buy sweets and crisps in the shop with out feeling embarrassed, or is this just me? I think that is the sort of mentality towards unhealthy stuff here. Everyone eats it, but no one wants to be seen with a bag of crisps in their shopping bag.

In England it is so completely the opposite. I have two examples where the difference is huge.

So, my school in Stockholm when I was a kid (10-16) had this school caffetetria that sold cakes, yogurt, fruit, hot chocolate and stuff. Mainly for the kids that stayed in school in the afternoon because their parents worked late. You could sit and play cards in the cafeteria, play pool or whatever. Anyways, there was a lot of fuss about this from some parents and in the end they decided to change. So we could no longer buy any cakes or even yoghurt at school, because they contained two much sugar. Instead you could only buy fruit. Except for fridays, on fridays you could get wipped cream on your hot chocolate for 5sek extra! Of cause people stoped going to the cafeteria, there was a sweet shop just around the corner... This sounds kind of normal for us Swedish people, well maybe a bit on the extreme side, but still you cant blame the parents from wanting their kids to eat healthy right?

Oh well here goes my English example... I went to school in England for 6 months, I was supposed to stay for a year, but it didn't work out. That is another story however...
What I wanted to tell was about my school. Ok, well the first differance, food in school is not included like it is in Sweden. Ofcause some people bring packed lunch, but they cant sit in the cafeteria with the other students, they have to sit in an empty classroom, wich is kind of wierd, so not many brought packed lunch at my school. The food at school was more or less chips and sausages, pizza or ceiche (spelling?). Well I'm a vegetarian so I had pizza and cieche everyday for 6 months. Seriously I gained so much weight in England, I'm not used to eating that way... So this was the only food the school had to offer, of cause there always was desert and crisps to your lunch as well. And it you have a snack in the afternoon its completely normal to have a bag of crisps.

So seeing this woman walking down the street with a bag of crisps the other day just made me think about it. Being half English half Swedish I notice these differences quite well. It's so small things. You don't really think about them I think if you are not grown up with both cultures. I mean you don't see the differences, our ways are so "normal" to us because we are used to them , we never question them.

Ok, that is all for today. Maybe you are bored out of your brain now, maybe not.
Cheerio!
My favourite crisps.... Hula Hoops.... But I'll tell you a secret, I prefer the bacon taste... wierd coming from a veggie huh?

Cornwall

I have been absolutely useless at blogging lately. Sorry about that...
At last school has started again. So I have to start doing some hard core studying now. This week, an examination about the EU, a group project on North Korea, an article on womens history and lots lots to read... (Strindberg, Hemingway, History and socialstudies)
Also I haven´t been working now for some time, which is nice for a change. School full time seems to be the thing.Just got home from a week in Cornwall and Devon yesterday. We were on a road trip two friends, my boyfriend and I. Padstow - Saint Ives - Bath. Niclas and I didn't have much time to see Bath unfortunately, we only spent one night there and then had to take the train to London to catch a plane home because he had to be back at work the next day. Our friends Olle and Boel are staying two more nights and are still there, I'm envious...
I can't decide wich place I liked the most. We were to Rick Steins famous restaurant in Padsow which was one of my favorite parts. It was SO GOOD! WE had the tasting menu all four of us. I thought I would copy out what we had, but it seems Niclas has taken the menus to work to show his colleges, so I'll have to do that another time. If anybody is interested..
Unfortunately I didn't take any photos of Rick Steins restaurant as I had forgotten my camera at home. But I think Boel took some (crappy phone pictures, but at least it is something!) so maybe I'll post those later too...We found this absolutely stunning little village - Montacute. And that it was. If I remember it right this was somewhere near Exeter. It was magic, like something from a fairytale. It had a big castle too... I'd love to go back there. If I ever finish my book or reach old age, this is where I'd spend it.Tintagel said to be King Arthurs castle was a beautiful place. More the scenery than the actual castle though. The landscape was amazing. It was a really hot day too. Lovely times...

Chubby cheeks... Well I've always had what they in Sweden call "apple cheeks" but I think I must have gained a few kilos while in Cornwall. I don't normally eat breakfast and in Cornwall I had a three course breakfast every morning! (Yogurt with fresh fruit, toast and then a huge English breakfast on top of that. Eggs, mushrooms, beans, tomatos... You get the picture.)

These sweet little things at the kissing gate at Pencarrow House... Olle+Boel, Me+Niclas

Eden Project was cool, but (again like Tintagel) I was more amazed by the actual bioms than all the plants inside them...Padstow. The tide is out on this picture, but you can see where the sea should have been...

There, so you got your share of holiday pics for now. I'm guessing you can live without pictures of Stone Henge and stuff (just google it, you'll probably find better pics) Just for the record I have about 200 more, if anyone cares to see give a shout. (And that was after I deleted about 150...)

Ok, I know I am not writing much about photography right now. But I honestly havnen't done a lot of photo shooting lately. Or that is a lie. I have done two. One that I just forgot to write about and one that I haven't got the photos from yet. So have patience with me...

The sun is shining... The summer is here for REAL! Two more days of schoolwork, then I have to be finished, can´t see how I will be. But I will.. Really looking forward to when all this is over, the weekend, midsummer's eve with all my friends... Last midsummer's was the best I ever had, I hope this one will be as good. It´s not always easy organizing it all but I think we got in the routine from last year. We buy pickled herring, nubbe, bread, salad, potatoes and vickning and stuff for lunch for everyone (They all get a receipt on how much they pay for all the stuff) and everyone brings what they want to grill for the evening. I woke up this morning with a dream that I was out at a party with all my friends, everyone was there, and I just couldn't be a part of it cause I had so much to do. When I got back to the party everyone was having the time of their lives, and they had already been there for a couple of hours so people where starting to get drunk and I was completely sober and not at all in a party mood. I think that's how I feel right now, that I am left over and can't join the party because I've got so much to do. Tonight I would LOVE to see John Grant at Strand. Check out his song Queen of Denmark. It is SO GOOD. It just makes me want to cry and scream. It is that kind of song that makes you feel bad. small an vulnerable but still makes you feel stronger. It's beautiful. I love the way how he experiments with his music, it was long since I heard something new that good. (Or is he new? I don't know, but he´s new to my ears.)

Photographing a project on food for school, pretty boring, but I can say there are worse ways of studying than sitting at Restaurant Landet in Telefonplan having cocktails, starters and desert! The other pictures are of the restaurant. I strongly recommend you to go and eat there the price is medium. Not very cheap but not that expensive. Though I should say, the food is absolutely fantastic.Well worth the price.
